Kudos & Brickbats

- techdiver mailing list, part of the Aquanaut site. Mailing list formed as a revolt against the uninformed debates of advanced diving in rec.scuba. Dedicated to technical diving, although it includes a lot of cavers.
-
Unfortunately in 1995 it was discovered by George M. Irvine III, who managed to be obnoxious, insulting, and egotistical in his first three posts.
George Irvine was even kicked out of TDI for his comments on techdiver about Rob Palmer's death.
This list certainly does not abide by RFC 1855: Netiquette Guidelines
-
Despite the high noise to signal ratio, it is a fantastic source of information, such as the recent Harness Rigging thread.
-
Randall C. Allen wrote some very useful
notes on using techdiver, and on using scuba-l.

This is a Usenet newsgroup. If you are using an appropriate browser, and your site or ISP carries it, then you should be able to get to it by accessing news:rec.scuba.
-
If not, then you could get in via http://www.dejanews.com. This is a web site that carries almost all the Usenet newsgroups.
-
Or there is a mailing list that carries a "digest" of rec.scuba - approximately, all the messages for yesterday, bundled together. See instructions for this in the rec.scuba FAQ.

divecomp - C Source code for 'divecomp', a dive computer simulator and planning aid, by Dave Waller (dave@hpdstma.hp.com). It handles air and nitrox, but not trimix. It also handles a variety of neo-Haldanean models, including Buhlmann, Huggins, U.S. Navy, Orca, and PADI Recreational Dive Planner.
-
ZPlan - PC dive planner that handles trimix. All text based - input is by editing a text file "profile.dat", running the program, and by default the output is in a text file "plan.out". But it cuts good tables, the author is actively maintaining it, and the price is right.
-
XS for Windows - PC dive planner that handles trimix. Windows GUI. When I have tried to use it I have run it to errors, but the next version will presumably be better. Again, the author is actively maintaining it, and the price is right.
- TAUSIM - PC dive planner that handles trimix. All singing all dancing GUI - in German. It also cuts good tables, the author is actively maintaining it, and the price is right. If your German is a little rusty, the actual download is at:

-
Global Underwater Explorers, a very new (announced July 1st, 1998)
technical/cave
certification agency, formed by Jarrod Jablonski. In distinction to TDI and IANTD, GUE:
- Promotes a maximum END of 130 fsw (with max ppO
2 of 1.4 ATA, or 1.6 ATA
for deco). Therefore no deep air course will be offered.
- Does not offer $10 academic style crossovers for instructors. Jarrod
intends to know a lot more about a new instructor, than that someone
else gave them a certificate.
- Is strictly Hogarthian.
While several WKPP divers and instructors are involved, GUE is not
simply an extension of the WKPP. No matter what some people think. Nor
what some people seem to want.
This is the ultimate temple of Hogarthian diving. Great site, collects
together much of the material below. The site index is probably the best entry point to the site.

We also did some underwater clean up work at Midland Beach in Staten Island, as
part of a big "Trashbuster" day. About a thousand people were there, mostly Scouts,
plus the Army, Red Cross, the Police Athletic League, the Staten Island Advance (the local newspaper), WXIA, Parks, Sanitation, and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. We had a lot of fun, and wound up with a lot of coverage in the Advance.
